描述

存儲器容量的大小決定存儲用戶程序的步數(shù)或語句條數(shù)的多少。輸入／輸出點數(shù)與程序存儲器容量之間有內(nèi)在的聯(lián)系。當輸入／輸出點數(shù)增加時，順序程序處理的信息量增大，程序加長，因而需加大程序存儲器的容量。

一般來說，數(shù)控車床、銑床、加工中心等單機數(shù)控設(shè)備所需輸入或輸出點數(shù)多在128點以下，少數(shù)復(fù)雜設(shè)備在128點以上。而大型數(shù)控機床，F(xiàn)MC、FMS、FA則需要采用中規(guī)?；虼笠?guī)模PLC。

為了突出可編程序控制器作為工業(yè)控制裝置的特點，或者為了與個人計算機“PC”或脈沖編碼器“PLC”等術(shù)語相區(qū)別，除通稱可編程控制器為“PLC”外，目前不少廠家，其中有些是世界著名的PLC廠家，還采用了與PLC不同的其他名稱。現(xiàn)將幾種常見名稱列舉如下：
